David J. Veres

Born: June 30, 1961 in Calgary, Alberta

David received his education from the University of Calgary, completing his BFA in 1985. His interests always lay in art and he constantly challenges himself to try different visual approaches. School was an opportunity to understand the depth that art has to be delved into to prevent an artist from becoming too complacent. This is evident in the many forms of art David has experimented with, from traditional to as many ism's that are out there.

His intrigue with acrylic paint came after school, and since that time he has been discovering and rediscovering it has unique properties and flexibility. This becomes truly evident in his decade of abstract painting followed by the unique "metallic landscapes" he developed. The unique textural and translucent properties of acrylic mediums would be the vehicle to draw him into landscape painting.

Always one to enjoy the Canadian landscape through hiking, camping and traveling, he made a conscious switch to use what he had learned and find a way to capture that beauty that surrounds all of us. A number of years ago he joined a loosely knit group of plein air painters and become hooked on painting outdoors. It was not until two years ago that David made a shift from the "metallic landscape" style into pure acrylic painting. It is almost a return to his early style and painting career in sports art, but with a world of confidence gained.

"As artists, it is our instinct to reflect on nature, and to interpret, capture, and create all that influences us." - David J. Veres

David is now concentrating on field trips within western Canada, as well as the rest of Canada, working on field studies and creating larger versions of select pieces. He has contributed to the formation of a group of artists with a similar vision. His hope is that the group "The New 7" will forge their own story for this century. Most of all to form a comradery and an opportunity to work together, with an emphasis on capturing western Canada.

"For myself, being part of a group creates an energy that will be reflected in our work and the public will see that in future group exhibitions." - David J. Veres
