A lot of people will ask, “What is the difference between a field study and a finished studio painting”?  This is a good question because once a painting is on a gallery wall there is not a lot of differentiation within that context.  Yet to the plein air painter there is a vast difference.

Field studies are done “en plein air” or outside.  Whether it be along the road, by a lake, or at 7500 foot elevation, the artist is immersed in nature and drawing his or her inspiration from that location.

Imagine trying to capture the change of light or mood from a photo.  It just doesn’t happen.  When out in the field over a course of four to five hours, the painting completely changes, as does the light, conditions, and artist’s temperament.  Most only have to think of Van Gogh to get that last statement!

For many artists the field painting is the finished product.  They may go back to the studio and tweak it up.  Or, if the study moves them to do so, they will create a larger studio version of the painting.  Ask any plein air painter, and they will tell you that something gets lost in the transition from field study to studio version.  When painting outside there is an intangible that cannot be captured in the confines of the studio.  That is the raw, unfinished, not overworked, quality of the field study.
